Michaelhouse Win Sunfoil School Series

Fri, 01/03/2013 - 11:10

5 weeks and 20 games later, the Final of the Sunfoil Schools Night League came down to traditional rivals Hilton and Michaelhouse. Both schools, due to their close proximity to one another, have enjoyed a rivalry across all sports. This time the two would meet in a 40 over cricket game to decide who goes back with the trophy and title of Sunfoil Schools Night Series champions.

Michaelhouse was first to bat with Bradly Roberts and Dale Beckley opening. The partnership didn’t last long as Hilton struck early with Matt Lauryssen removing the wicket of Roberts for 3 runs.  Brandon Tattam was the next man in for House and put on a 2nd wicket partnership of 63 before Beckley was caught and bowled by Cambell Caley 7 runs shy of his half century.

SA U19 player Greg Oldfield was the next man in before Tattam’s wicket fell 7 runs later in the same manner as Beckley’s caught and bowled by Caley.  Oldfield did not last too long either as he lost his wicket after being stumped off the bowling of Caley. Caley, now with 3 wickets in the game, was putting a halt to the Michaelhouse proceedings.

Michaelhouse were now sitting on 99/4 with Jason Marshall and Barrie Forrester-Smith at the crease. The pair went on to form a 62 run partnership to get Michaelhouse out of the spot of bother they found themselves in after the loss of Oldfield. Forrester-Smith departed off the bowling of Lauryssen after scoring 37. He would be the last wicket that House would lose as Marshall (33*) and Kyle Pyne-James, who made a quick fire 22 off 13 balls, batted out the rest of the overs to take Michaelhouse to 192/4 in 40 overs. Hilton now had to chase 193 at a run rate of 4.8 to win the series.

Captain Brian Pfaff and Steven Reeves opened the batting for Hilton and the pair was looking good for a solid opening partnership before Forrester-Smith removed both openers in the same over. Hilton had suddenly gone from 31 for no loss to 31/2. With two new batmen at the crease, Dan Cole and Jaryd Edy were doing a job of consolidating the innings before Nick Elliot ran out Cole when he was on 24. Cole and Edy had formed a 30 run partnership but the loss of Cole had left Michaelhouse on 61/3. Simon Purdon was the next man in but he was also run out by Forrester-Smith after scoring only 5 runs. Michaelhouse pinning back the Hilton run chase left Hilton on 70/4. Michael Dedekind managed 15 runs before he was caught off the bowling of James de Chastelain. Edy, still at the crease watching wickets fall around him, was still going about his business of scoring runs. His next partner Luc Maingard had a short 3 run stay at the crease before he was bowled by Nick Glassock.

In a standout performance Edy got to his half century before he was run out on 59. Regular loss of wickets had put Hilton on 164/7 with only the tail to try and reach the total.  2 more wickets fell after the loss of Edy putting Michaelhouse in a more commanding position.  At 179/9 the two remaining batmen were unable to get the runs required, giving Michaelhouse the victory by a close 10 runs.
