What is the PGA and what is the Tour?

It is important for any incumbent to understand the unique difference between a tour player and a PGA Professional. Put simply a tour player specializes in perfecting their own game and playing on professional circuits around the world earning their income from prize money and endorsements (sponsorship) like Ernie Els. A PGA Professional is also a professional golfer but completes a tertiary degree or diploma run through the PGA. He will learn Golf Management, Biomechanics (Swing Theory), Sports Science, Law related to Golf, Equipment Technology, Practical teaching and will have to play and coach to a very high standard.

There are in fact a number of qualified PGA Professionals playing on tour and carry both cards like Ian Poulter of England but even a larger number of PGA Professionals who have played the tour and moved across to the teaching side like John Dickson (DCC), Derek James (Southbroom) and Trevor Wilkes (Selbourne).

Qualified PGA Professionals can enter 4 X Sunshine Tour events per annum and all region and national PGA events. The Open Championship and SA Open are also open for pre-qualifying as a PGA Pro. Imagine giving professional golf a proper go while getting a PGA qualification.
