Nomads Hockey Day 3 Preview: Wynberg vs Maritzburg College Showdown

Sun, 31/03/2013 - 19:05

Undoubtedly the match to approach with much relish on the third and final day of the Nomads Hockey Festival on Papes Astro and the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf Monday is that between host school Maritzburg College and Wynberg of Cape Town.

This enticing encounter takes place at 9.50 am at the Papes pitch on the Maritzburg College campus and it could go either way.

Maritzburg College are celebrating their 150th birthday and the Nomads Hockey Festival plays an integral role in their 150th Winter Sports Festival.

On Saturday, Wynberg beat Pretoria Boys’ High School 4-1 in the morning and St Johns College, Johannesburg, 3-1 in the afternoon.

Sunday, the Capetonians beat top UK hockey school Millfield 6-3 in a match where their tactics of using a high press worked a treat. Then in the afternoon Wynberg accounted for King Edward VII School (KES) 3-0.

No less than 16 goals in four matches with just five against indicates the dominance and in their coaching staff Wynberg have two experienced men in Anton Grobler and analyst Jamie Kroukamp, while goalkeeper and captain Rob McKinley has been an inspiration to his team.

Ryan Crow and Migyle Stevens have been a rich source of goals but it has been the all-round skill, strength on and off the ball, and sheer will to win of the Wynberg lads that has stood out.

College, under coach Guy Elliott and captain Jorgen Wikstrom, put in a great performance to beat the talented Millfield side 3-0 on Saturday morning before an unconvincing 1-0 win over Grey High School of Port Elizabeth in the afternoon.

Sunday morning, College were involved in an exciting 2-2 draw with traditional rivals Selborne College of East London before beating St John’s College 3-1 after lunch.

College, like Wynberg, place much store in looking to turn over opposition ball and punish the adversary with counter-attacks at pace. Defence is not a word that sits easily in their lexicon, it’s more a case of stifling the ball carrier’s passing options and pouncing on the inevitable mistake.

The two goalkeepers are also key, as aside from McKinley’s skill in the Wynberg goalmouth, College stopper Siya Nolutshungu is in the form of his life.

Of course, this is not the only match on the final day, and much can be expected from the rest.
