A strong and commanding performance by the Toyota Free State on Saturday secured them a semifinal at home in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship next weekend.

The Free State side secured a comfortable 27-0 win over the Xerox Golden Lions at Ellispark, a win that moved them past the DHL Western Province due to a better points' difference.

WP did beat the Cell C Sharks 27-20 at DHL Newlands, but could not score the bonus point try needed to take them clear into second position.

Earlier on Friday, the Vodacom Blue Bulls secured their top spot on the log with a 31-21 win over the EP Kings.

The Blue Bulls will now host the Sharks in the one semi and Free State will entertain WP in the other.

A summary of the weekend's matches follows below:

Eastern Province Kings 21 (16), Vodacom Blue Bulls 31 (17)

In Port Elizabeth, a hat-trick by Jurie Linde secured a 31-21 win over the EP Kings and top spot in the Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship. The Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-19 team will host the semifinal next weekend against the Sharks.

Scorers:

EP Kings (Under-19) 21 (16). Tries: Malcolm Jaer (2). Conversion: Garrick Mattheus. Penalties: Mattheus (3).
Blue Bulls (Under-19) 31 (17). Tries: Jurie Linde (3). Abongile Nonkontwana. Conversions: Simon Bolze (3), Kurt Webster. Penalty: Bolze.

DHL Western Province 27 (17), Cell C Sharks 20 (10)

It needed a late try by centre Heinrich Buhr to secure a home win for Western Province at Newlands.

The home side had a good 17-10 lead at the break, but the Sharks clawed their way back into the match and with 10 minutes left, it was still 20-20.

Buhr then eased the worries, but the fourth try for WP, that would secured a home semi next weekend, was not forthcoming.

Scorers:

WP (Under 19) 27 (17). Tries: Heinrich Buhr, Ryan Oosthuizen, Ernst Stapelberg. Conversions: Ernst Stapelberg (2), Brandon Thomson. Penalty: Stapelberg.
Sharks (Under-19) 20 (10). Tries: Matthew Reece-Edwards, Sphamandla Ngcobo. Conversions: Innocent Radebe (2). Penalty: Radebe.

Xerox Golden Lions 0 (0), Toyota Free State 27 (8)

It was a matter of slow poison at Ellispark where a well-drilled Free State side squeezed the life out of the home side, who paid dearly for two yellow cards in quick succession in the second half.

That left them with 13 players on the field for six minutes and a ruthless Free State team who scored twice using their numerical advantage.

The win jumped the Bloem side past WP in the standings and they will now host the Cape side in the semifinal next weekend.

Scorers:

Golden Lions (Under-19) 0 (0).
Free State (Under-19) 27 (8). Tries: Christiaan Erasmus, Jasper Wiese, Reinach Venter, Tyron Goddard. Conversions: Andre Swarts (2). Penalty: Swarts
