  • St Johns Fest 2015 day 1

St John's festival of rugby as the name suggests, means that there are no rival logs, winners’ medals and trophies to be handed out at the end. The emphasis is on enjoyment and on building a team for the season ahead. We have had a great start to our 20th annual Rugby Festival.

Day 1 Highlights

Hilton College versus Nelspruit was like a mini test match, the lead changed four times before Nelspruit scored three quick tires in the second half. Half time score was 5/3 to Nelspruit who eventually won 22 to 9.

Wing Joshua Vermeulen from Paul Roos Gymnasium scored 37 individual points in his teams mighty win of 94/0 over visiting Italian side Viadana. Pal Roos scored 13 tries against the luckless Italians.

St Charles College from Pietermaritzburg and Jeppe High produced the ultimate thriller of the day when Cameron Burg from Jeppe scored the winning try after the full time hooter had gone to set up his sides 27/24 win. At half time Jeppe were in the lead by 20 points to nil but the team from KZN produced one of the finest come backs in the 20 years that the St John’s College festival has taken place.

We are looking forward to another exciting day of school boy rugby on Saturday with some wonderful match ups with likes of Monument, Garsfontein and Paarl Boys once again producing some exciting rugby.

Have your say!
