The 1st team game started off with high intensity. The Clifton forwards dominating the possession and both teams put in some big hits. Clifton scored first through a pick and drive from hooker Jon Carrington and the try was converted by Ethan de Kock. Their forwards proved to be a big threat taking the ball up strongly and were rewarded with a penalty in front of the poles and three points were kicked by the captain Murray Dunn.  The match continued to display urgency as both schools tried to build phases through their set plays.

Just before the second half, St. Charles came back hard with some elusive running from their backline and scored a converted try which put the score at 10-7 at the break to Clifton.  After half time Clifton’s defence fell away a bit as a few first time tackles were missed which allowed the opposition to strike early and take the lead 14-10.  Clifton fought back hard with two well worked tries through young 15-year old prop Nicholas Downes and winger Mangoba Cele, who scored in the corner after some good handling from the backs.  The game ended at 20-14 with the Clifton First XV celebrating its first win against St. Charles in their rugby history.
