Day 3 Top 10 Standout Players St Stithians Festival 2014

Tue, 22/04/2014 - 11:16

Some dominant displays from Hoerkool Linden and St Andrews and some pretty tight matches between Maritzburg Collge and Wynberg Boys High - which was decided by a penalty in the final minute - characterized day 3 of the St Stithians Easter Festival. The gracious hosts only won one of the 3 matches, but the competitive nature of the festival is highlighted by the fact that only 1 team, Wynberg Boys High, managed to avoid defeat throughout, despite coming very close in their final game.

Robert Ball: St Andrews-Centre

Mr. Reliable was at it again, scoring in his third consecutive game. Throughout the tournament Robert has been a measure of calm as captain, consistently putting in good displays on the field, and finishing the tournament 3rd on the overall points charts.

Lecander Sallies: SACS-Fullback

Lecander once again displayed why he is so dangerous from fullback. Scoring two more tries in the final game against St Stithains took his overall points tally for the tournament to 44 points, claiming the top points scorer for the tournament.

Shingirai Hlangogo: St Benedict-Wing

The pacey winger finally got some space in St Benedicts final game of the Easter festivals. He showed clean heals to the defenders of Helpmekaar to dot down twice. A constant threat with ball in hand, he gave a head or two to the Helpmekaar players.

Keagan Timm: Wynberg-8th Man

Timm was Captain Fantastic against Maritizburg College where his side won thanks to a last minute penalty. He was everywhere during the game cleaning out players, stealing the ball, or being available to carry the ball. Timm looked very busy throughout the game.

Karl Martin: Wynberg-Full Back

4th in the overall points table, Kyle kicked the final penalty that gave his side a 16-17 win against Maritzburg College.  A strong and pacey counter attacking player throughout the festival, Kyles running from deep and ability to beat several players allowed his teammates to find space and carry on the momentum.

Waldo van Staden: Helpmekaar-Wing

We saw another fine display from the winger scoring 2 tries and managing to beat St Benedicts 19-27. It seemed that every time he had the ball something was expected to happen. Solid on the wing and a few good breaks contributed to a great performance from the Helpmekaar player.

Tiaan Schutte: Die Helpmekaar-Flank

The loose forward was dangerous from the base of the scrum making a few good breaks and setting up a try for a team. He also managed to score two tries himself, culminating in a standout performance from the flanker.

Brandon Lizamore: Hoerskool Linden-Centre

With two tries to his name in the Linden final game against Windhoek High, Lizamore made his presence felt in the backline.  A solid display characterized by darting runs showed why Lizamore has been one of the most consistent players in the Linden side.

Masikane Mazwi: Maritzburg College-Hooker

Arguably the best hooker at the St Stithians Easter fest, Masikane makes the standout players list for a 2nd time. Scoring tries in two of his side's 3 games, Masikane showed why he is so highly rated. Picking up a niggle in the second game, Masikane was dominant again in his number 2 position whether in the scrum, lineout, or carrying the ball forward.

Marcel Coetzee: Maritzburg College-Centre

Making the standout players list for the 3rd time in a row, the Maritzburg Skipper was one of the most consistent players at the festival. Taking 2nd spot in the overall points and also 2nd in most tries scored at the festival, Coetzee provided consistency and brilliance from the midfield for Maritzburg College.
