Amajibos SA u17 suffered a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of the Ghanaian national team at the Sinaba stadium in Benoni. Ghana took control of the game from kick off getting the better of the exchanges as the SA team struggled to find its feet and gain composure. Ghana’s constant pressing proved fruitful in the later parts of the first half as two quick goals in succession from Asare Paul De-Veries (31st min) and David Atanga (37th min) hampered the spirits of the Amajibos.

Halftime talk from Amajibos Coach Shakes Mashaba must have lifted team spirits as they pulled two goals back in the 2nd half with Old Mutual Academy boy, Morne Nel, scoring their first goal in the 67th minute and Siyanda Ngobo making a last gasp effort in the 87th minute. The two late goals turned out to be too little too late however, as Ghanaian David Atang’s second goal in the 81st minute proved to be the decider.

Despite the loss, Amajibos knocked out Zambia 2-1 on aggregate in the second round on their way to the round three. Amajibos will head to Ghana a man down as Mzo headed back to Durban today with a back injury. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.

Coach's Take

Shakes Mashaba, Amajibos coach and former SA senior coach for Bafana Bafana

HSSM: Disappointing result on your first leg home game against Ghana, what are your thoughts on your boys’ performance?
Shakes Mashaba: It’s not a good result, actually we have now put ourselves in a very, very tight situation in terms of the home and away goal difference. We have to make sure that we win there [Ghana] 3-0, or we go there and win 3-2 as well and we can go to extra time or penalties, but that is a mammoth task. […] I think first half we did well, we gave away two silly goals and they could have scored another two goals, but we stood ground and saved some shots. […] Second half we came up with a strategy, we had them and they couldn’t play and we scored a goal. Then again we went to sleep then they got their third goal, then we had to come back again and play the same formation. That’s when we managed to score and the game ended in 3-2. […] Our boys didn’t play as expected.

HSSM: What will be your game plan your away game of the second leg?
Shakes Mashaba: We have to try to revert the result, and how are we going to do that… We are not going to sit back but we have to be cautious. […] The best way of defending is to attack. We will do the same thing we did in the second half because first half we never really put them under pressure, but second half we went forward and played the ball out of our own half and played it in their half. That is what we are going to try and do, play most of the time in their own half.
