Fiji – Slade Prestwich from Scottburgh, Durban, has won the 2013 VQS Global Champs with a powerful performance at Cloudbreak in Fiji, ousting Deivid Silva from Brazil into second place. Slade strung together some precision surfing and good barrel riding on the great waves on offer, to take the win and the US$10,000 (R98,558) first prize cheque.

The Volcom VQS Surf Tour is a regional surf tour, with each region allowing surfers to accumulate points towards qualifying for the VQS Champs in their country, and then onto this event, the VQS World Champs. Contestants from Brazil, Australia, Peru, Japan, New Zealand, US and South Africa amongst others all competed in this event.

“We’re stoked that a South African won this event and brought it home,” said Volcom South Africa Marketing Manager Jonathan Channing. “Slade is one of the country’s top junior surfers and this event has shown that he is one of the world’s best. We at Volcom want to wish him congratulations. We’re all proud of him on his win.”

The 18-year-old natural footer showed skill and patience in the final at Cloudbreak to take the win and is already being called ‘the next Jordy Smith.’ Slade has been training hard for the last two years, and was ecstatic on his victory.

“I’m so stoked to have won this event,” he said. “Thanks to all my friends back home, my sponsors, and to Volcom for putting on this event.”

The Volcom VQS Champs forms part of the Volcom Pro Fiji, a World Championship Tour event taking place at Fiji at the moment. For more on the event or for the live webcast go to the event site – Volcom Fiji Pro
