Joshe Faulkner led the charge for the SA junior surfing team on Day 4 of the VISSLA ISA World Surfing Championships in Salinas, Ecuador on Wednesday, advancing through two rounds of U16 Boys’ heats to reach the last six in the qualifying stream.

The Jeffreys Bay based surfer finished second behind Quinn Bruce (AUS) in Round 3 as the pair dispatched competitors from Peru and France to the repecharge rounds. Round 4 saw Faulkner again place second, this time behind Nolan Rapoza (USA) with surfers from Hawaii and Mexico relegated.

Now just two heats away from a spot in the division’s Grand Final and the opportunity to win an individual gold, silver, bronze or copper medal at the world’s biggest junior surfing event, Faulkner will return to action on Friday as Thursday sees a full programme of repercharge rounds.

Jordy Maree in the U16 Boys and Shane Sykes and Steffen Burrows in the U18 Boys all fell into the gruelling repercharge stream when they finished outside the top two in their respective heats. Maree was just a point shy of second place while Sykes and Burrows struggled to find the good waves in their heats and both finished a distant fourth.

Most of the Saffas already in the repercharge rounds fared well in front of the second judging tower in the middle of the beach with Teal Hogg and Chanelle Botha (both U18 Girls), Cana Foster (U16 Girls) and Adin Masencamp (U16 Boys) all winning their repercharge Round 2 heats and Ethan Fletcher (U16 Boys) placing second in his.

The SA team also had their first elimination from the event with Ruth Armstrong (U16 Girls) finishing third in her repercharge Round 2 heat and left to support their teammates for the rest of her time in Ecuador.

The provisional team standings after four days of the event which runs until Sunday sees South Africa in equal third position with France while Australia and Hawaii, who finished first and second at last year’s event, sharing first place at this stage of the eight day competition.

All the SA team members still in contention, with the exception of Joshe Faulkner, Shane Sykes and Steffen Burrows, will be in action in the repercharge rounds on Thursday
