The SA U18 water polo team earned their first tournament win today at the FINA Mens Youth Water polo Champs!

The boys beat Peru 10 – 7! Click here for full tournament results.

The road hasn’t been easy for the SA team, as in comparison to the rest of the water polo world, we don’t play nearly as much as the water polo power houses do.

We have seen how much we, as a country, needs to improve.

"The level polo is really good here, the top teams seem so evenly matched and could cause for a very interesting quarters, semis, and final. We have seen how much we, as a country, needs to improve. The positives would be that our second half of the game is really good. We seem to be holding our own in the second half of the games. We have actually won a couple of chukka's and our defense and attack start finding momentum towards the end of the game.

Each game we have improved as a team and are starting to play better polo as the tournament continues

"Which also means we are conceding 8 goals in the first half of all of our games which puts us on the back foot from the start. I have found that we are actually quite fit. Each game we have improved as a team and are starting to play better polo as the tournament continues." ~ Nick Downes

The team have remained positive and focused although they suffered 4 straight defeats with the heaviest against one of the strongest polo countries in the world Italy 17 – 1.

Proud of the boys for keeping positive and maintaining good spirits .
Jason and Nick Downes have kept the team together and focused ~ Brad Rowe

The boys will now look to win the rest of their matches to secure a healthy world ranking placement. SA will play today’s winner of the New Zealand vs Iran match tomorrow.

Quotes from SA U18 Water Polo Coach Brad Rowe

"Lost 11:4 to Russia. Really manned up and made them earn their win. Everybody had a much better game with Andy having a great game in the cage." ~ Brad Rowe

We will take a lot out of it and improve with every game

"Just lost to Turkey 14:6. Had some good moments and two good quarters but as it was our 1st game as a team and the 1st international for most of the players we were unprepared for the intensity and pace of the game. We will take a lot out of it and improve with every game" ~ Brad Rowe

We wish the boys further luck at the tournament! #ProudlySouthAfrican!
