Where to from Here? How to Invent the Best Version of YOU

Tue, 30/09/2014 - 09:10

Work hard in silence, let success make the noise!

So Now You Have Sold Your Dream, Where to from Here?

Now that you have identified your dream and sold it to those whom you believe will assist you to achieve it, the next step is to identify what it is exactly you need to do and make a plan. To do this you need to start by asking yourself the following questions:

  1. What do I want to achieve?
  2. What do I need to do to make it happen?
  3. Who is going to help me achieve this?

Get Evaluated

It isn’t always easy to “Self evaluate” your own performance and current capabilities. Seek out those that have the knowledge and expertise to tell you what you need to do, not necessarily what you want to do! There will always be more than one area to address ie. skills, conditioning, strength etc. Identify the main areas and start there first. If you solve the main deficiencies then others may start to fall in to place. You may have deficiencies with your speed and skill later in training or performance.

Although these are two areas that can be addressed, they will improve dramatically as you become fitter and therefore fatigue doesn’t affect you as much later in your performance. When you are evaluating your personal “Athletic Package”, you are trying to create a complete package of yourself, specific to the requirements and demands of your chosen sport. It is pointless creating yourself into an excellent running athlete comparable to a marathon runner when you are going to be playing rugby. The physical demands of each sport are dramatically different and therefore the plan will be different as well.

Identify Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Do not avoid your weaknesses as everyone likes to do what they are good at and avoid the things they aren’t. In strength & conditioning we say “If you can’t, you must!” If you are stronger with skills from your right side, you will continue to favour your right hand and foot. Challenge your development on your left side to really develop your strengths and body balance. Make a plan and make it happen. It is however important that you continue to enhance your strengths that have made you successful thus far! Where possible try to identify mentors that you believe will help you to grow. They can be from anywhere and simply have attributes that you admire and aspire to.

Keep challenging yourself to adjust your goals and expectations as things start to unfold. Some things will progress very quickly whilst others may take more time. Although it is good to measure yourself up against others to see where you are at, you are all individuals and will progress at different rates.

Inventing the Best Version of You

You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks!

Remember we are trying to invent the best version of you by maximising your potential. Trust the process and stay committed, but most of all make sure that you are having fun. Enjoy your training even though it may be tough, remember that it is helping you to get closer to your dream! That’s why we all stay involved in the sports we love. Lastly, never listen to those that don’t have the same passion as you toward achieving your dream ... it’s not their dream. You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks!
