Choose your Role Models & Mentors wisely!

Growing up we tend to gravitate toward those that inspire us, generally because they are one of the best in the sport you hope to one day be successful. These role models are an important part toward your drive to be the best that you can be. It is however important that you “Keep it Real”. Make sure that the role model you have chosen is a sports person who is creating success, and not a “Gym Enthusiast” or “Magazine Fitness Model” where pictures are often altered.

While it does take a lot of determination from these individuals to get into the shape they're in, you must remember: “They are not training for the sports arena, they are training more for the beach”.

Being an Athlete Requires Training like One

You can’t aspire to be the best you can be in your sport and then pursue training programs designed for body builders and gym enthusiasts. People are always surprised to hear the time committed toward the preparation of an athlete on a daily basis. The 1-2 hour training session seen by most is the easy part, but it is the commitment to the other 22 hours that really reveals the Character and Attitude of individuals if they want to succeed.

Your role model and mentor may possibly be the same person, or your role model may possibly be Cristiano Ronaldo (who is very difficult to get some personal time with). A mentor who can help you stay on track and inspire you through their own knowledge and actions becomes invaluable on a regular basis. It can be as much as a catch up and coffee to discuss training and get advice in areas you may want reassurance or guidance.

While these critical people in your personal development may also change over the years of your development as you seek different areas of your personal growth, they all play an important part and are simply passing on the baton to the next person who can help you to maximise your potential. Choose wisely, enjoy, and most of all make sure they add a positive influence!
